Acoustical Assessments for Schools

VanAir Design has worked with over a dozen schools across BC to assess acoustical problems and provide detailed solutions. Through this work, we’ve developed a process of:

• Engaging with teachers and staff to define the problem
• Taking sound measurements on site to quantify the acoustical deficiencies
  
• Referencing metrics set by acoustical performance standards for schools
  
• Presenting readable reports
  

We have solved the root causes of common problems including:

• Hearing fatigue for teachers
  
• Poor communication and speech intelligibility in classrooms
  
• Excessively reverberant and ‘loud’ atriums
  
• Disruptive sound transmission between classrooms and from hallways
  

Additionally, we have presented our work in schools at the Educational Facility Managers Association of BC’s conference and at the Vancouver School Board’s Health and Safety conference.
